For the past few months I have been watching anything and everything on TV.The one genre of shows that I saw often were the Reality cum Talent shows.I encountered the concept of Reality tv for the first time through the movie 'The Truman Show'.At that point of time i thought it was a new and somewhat invasive concept. But since then a plethora of these shows have stormed the television. The first biggest show in India was I think the Channel[v] Popstars. On watching the ordinary looking but talented girls making it big in the music industry my mother would say in amazement "Kahan se kahan pahuch gayi yeh ladkiyaan".That was the effect of these reality cum talent shows expressed in simpler terms by an average person!
In the same year of 2001 we heared about one of the controversial reality tv shows "The Temptation Island" .I remember I was in the hostel at that time and we all (group of friends)had decided to watch it.Quite tempting indeed :D.But unfortunately we couldn't watch it cuz the warden found the concept to be too alien to the Indian culture.(silly her).
Anyway the next big show that made news with the youthful crowd was MTV Hero Honda Roadies(included Hero Honda here cuz i just can't imgaine the name without the whole Hero Honda thingie ringing in my ears said everytime during the commercial break).Quite a fresh concept of traversing around India on the bikes and also getting to see some bizzare stuff like Roadie Ranvijay walking down the street dressed as a Batman and Roadie Tony (and other guys too) dressed as girls and dancing in a crowded club. When my dad saw me watching this he said 'What rubbish have you started watching and what is wrong with those guys?' Well, but at the end of the day they all got a bike and Ranvijay hit the jackpot and has become a VJ!!! Quite a lucky fellow.
This year too has had many, infact too many to remember and also some very easily forgettable shows. My current favourite being "The Apprentice".Donald trump said on the 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' that he loves to say "You are fired". No doubt it has given a whole new look to the definition of 'You are fired'.If i don't like what my sister says I can say "you are fired". HOW COOL IS THAT. :-D
Some other shows were "MTV Hero Honda Roadies2", "India's best cinestars ki khoj" on Zee tv, "Indian Idol" on Sony channel,ESPN-Star Sports"Harsha Ki Khoj", Channel [V] Super Singer the first episode of which was telecasted on so many different channels of Star tv, then "The Simple Life" on Star World with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.I think its the most humiliating(for the host family)show ever.Channel[V] is starting a new talent hunt for the most happening band!
Not to forget(though very ironical since they ARE forgettable!) some item girl search contests too!!!
Its lot of good money and loads of fame and glamour too.Look at Ranvijay....he has been spotted in every cool party including 'The Bombay Times' 10th anniversary party! and also has been spotted many times with VJ Anusha too.....hmm definitely lucky.....:-D
What I have found common in all these shows is the fact that people enjoy looking at life from a different person's point of view. Its trying to live somebodyelse's life when they know its not easy to get anything in life. Its reality but still a distant dream for most of them. Not everyone can be the Indian Idol or Super Singer or VIVA or Asma. Its an unusual sense of satisfaction that is derived from all this.Deep down inside the human being is trying to find his own dreams, aspirations, motivation in other successful people's success.
WHOSE LIFE IS IT ANYWAY?
